Senior Software Engineer: Ruby on Rails
Want to work on a small team with other A Players? Want to work with big data in a Rails environment? How about all of this in a startup environment without the startup risk?
Pubget.com is a search engine that helps scientists and researchers get access to published articles without hassles or headaches. We enable search across more than 30 million articles and provide centralized subscription access to many hundreds of universities and other research institutions across the world — by matching the two, we help scientists do their work more easily.
We are looking for an experienced software engineer who knows Rails well, and is also very strong with relational database. We use a customized Solr for search, and article data are stored on MongoDB — experience in these technologies is a big plus. We have hundreds of servers on Amazon AWS. And yes, we test and run a continuous integration server. Experience with Microsoft Windows is very much not needed.
We’re a small team so are seeking an engineer who is proficient at all levels of the stack, you: you get around well in Unix, are comfortable at the command line, know tools like git, bash, debugger, ssh. You know SQL, but also understand data design, and know configuration and workings of MySQL (or better yet, PostgreSQL). You eat Apache or Nginx configs for breakfast. And you know all levels of Rails from bottom to top, including externals like rake, Capistrano, bundler, RVM and so on. We’re geeks.
We’re very much a startup in spirit — agile, fast, risk takers. We’re in Boston close to South Station, and our parent company Copyright Clearance Center (which acquired us just over a year ago) is in Danvers. Matt's been with Pubget since the beginning, joining in early 2009 and building the framework for many of the features that make our software the fastest way to get access to scientific research. Matt loves nothing more than figuring out paths to PDFs — just ask him. He's an MIT grad who loves making music on the side.

Peter sets Pubget's stylistic stage as our Lead UX Developer. Peter is our "unicorn" — the mythical beast who is a brilliant designer and writes clean and beautiful code. An adept martial artist, when not kicking derriere, he is designing and developing iOS games as a hobby.

Anit Das Software Engineer
Anit is the lead developer on PaperStats, and has lead the effort to make all of Pubget accessible via a RESTful API, used by major corporations who have implemented Pubget. Anit has a BS in Computer Science from Tufts University.

Pat Dignan Software Engineer
Pat graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Computer Science. He has worked on our systems for running and managing the hundreds of tasks that gather and manage that data behind Pubget, and is our Amazon Web Services go-to-guy. Pat prefers writing Ruby to writing English.

Ian Donovan Software Engineer
Ian joined Pubget after getting his Computer Engineering BS from Tufts. Pubget Updates was his first major contribution to the team, is now reworking the code that gobbles up article abstract feeds for lunch. He's also a stand-up comic and eats like a squirrel.

David works with our enterprise and university customers to help them implement Pubget's services within their organizations. David knows more about Pubget than anyone, and apparently doesn't know the meaning of stress.
