The Japan International Cooperation Agency and JOICFP are working with the Viet Nam government to implement a new reproductive health project in Nghe An province. The goal of the project is to use a primary health care approach to improve women's reproductive health. Various components of the project include 1) training or retraining midwives and assistant physicians with a focus on such reproductive health topics as safe motherhood and IUD insertion and removal; 2) providing of medical equipment (delivery beds, midwifery kits, and IUD insertion kits) to the commune health centers; 3) renovating health facilities; 4) grassroots education; and 5) capacity-building in the Family Planning and Maternal and Child Health Center that will be the administrative center of the project. Project planners hope to increase availability of IUD insertion and removal services (women currently have to rely on a monthly visit by mobile teams). Grassroots educational activities will involve the efforts of the women's union, which will contribute to the project from its planning stage.
