Osteomyelitis and Arthritis

Semin Nucl Med 39(1):9 (2009) PMID 19038598

Infections of bone and the joints can represent major diagnostic and therapeutic challenges to all clinicians. Together with osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, soft-tissue infections like cellulites/fasciitis and abscess formation can occur, which have to be treated appropriately. Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive method that can be used to search for bone and joint infections. Labeled leukocytes often are used as the gold standard to identify infectious foci in the musculoskeletal system, but major drawbacks of this method are the imaging of chronic infections and imaging of the axial skeleton. Like ^1^1^1In-labeled leukocyte imaging, ^9^9^mTc-labeled antigranulocyte antibody scintigraphy has a role in the imaging of osteomyelitis of the peripheral skeleton. Magnetic resonance imaging is widely used to evaluate musculoskeletal infections and is excellent in identifying abscess formation, but the extent and spread of infection is sometimes difficult to delineate because hyperemia and infection are not congruent.

    Clin Pediatr (Phila) 49(2):110-5 (2010) PMID 19734439

Although the incidence of acute mastoiditis has been substantially reduced since the introduction of antibiotic therapy, mastoiditis complications are still commonly seen in the pediatric population. Many of these cases require lengthy hospitalizations and extensive medical and surgical intervention...

After 22 yrs of follow-up, hip OA was diagnosed in 41 subjects (4.9%). Heavy manual labour predicted the risk of developing hip OA [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 6.7; 95% CI 2.3, 19.5]. Permanent damage as a consequence of any musculoskeletal injury was also an independent predictor of hip OA (adjusted O...
