An updated concept of coagulation with clinical implications.

J Am Dent Assoc (Ed Ital) 140(5):567-74 (2009) PMID 19411526

Over the past century, a series of models have been put forth to explain the coagulation mechanism. The coagulation cascade/waterfall model has gained the most widespread acceptance. This model, however, has problems when it is used in different clinical scenarios. A more recently proposed cell-based model better describes the coagulation process in vivo and provides oral health care professionals (OHCPs) with a better understanding of the clinical implications of providing dental care to patients with potentially increased bleeding tendencies.

Direct oral factor IIa inhibitors represent a new class of anticoagulants for the prevention and treatment of venous and selected arterial thomboembolisms. Dabigatran etexilate is the most studied and promising of the oral direct thrombin inhibitors. Preclinical and early-phase clinical studies show...

Thrombosis, or complications from thrombosis, currently occupies the top three positions in the cardiovascular causes of morbidity and mortality in the developed world. There are a limited number of safe and effective drugs to prevent and treat thrombosis. Animal models of thrombosis are necessary to...

Pregnancy causes a decrease in APC resistance in mice, which can be explained by the elevation of protein S levels and increased TFPI activity in plasma. Our findings show species specificity in the effects of pregnancy on the major determinants of the protein C system and suggest that protein S and...
