Pros and cons of using resazurin staining for quantification of viable Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in a screening assay

J Microbiol Methods 78(1):3 (2009) PMID 19427338

Staining of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms with 20 @?M resazurin during 20 min was shown to provide a good screening assay in 96-well micro titer plates. However, data quality was found to be dependent on the staining duration and biofilm concentration. Also, the inadequacy of using resazurin calibration curves with planktonic cells to estimate S. aureus biofilm concentrations was demonstrated.

We demonstrate that INPs affect Chlamydia growth in a dose dependent manner after bacterial invasion. The efficiency of C. trachomatis L2 and C. caviae GPIC entry into host cells was not altered in the presence of INPs. In C. caviae, entry appears to proceed normally with recruitment of actin and th...

Human mesenchymal stem cells are a valuable cell source for tissue engineering. Determination of cell number and viability is crucial. However, this can be tested only at the end of cell culture. This study shows that Resazurin dye staining is a reliable tool for evaluation of cell n...
