[Secondary osteoporosis UPDATE. The etiology, prevalence, and characteristics of secondary osteoporosis].
Secondary osteoporosis is caused by various disorders, metabolic derangements, and drug administration, whose elimination as a cause for osteoporosis is necessary before establishing the diagnosis of primary osteoporosis. The underlying diseases or conditions are diversified, including those related to endocrine, nutrition, rheumatism, immobility, medicine, hematology, and congenital one. Among them, osteoporosis induced by steroid administration and that accompanied by diabetes mellitus are most frequently observed. They exhibit high fracture risks based on deteriorated bone quality rather than reduced bone mass.
