Molecular neuroendocrine targets for obesity therapy.

Curr Opin Endocrinol Diabetes Obes 17(5):441-5 (2010) PMID 20585249

Although energy balance is tightly regulated in order to maintain a specific level of adiposity, the incidence of obesity continues to increase. Consequently, it is essential that effective therapeutics for the treatment and prevention of obesity be developed. This review provides a brief update on some recent advances in the characterization of neuroendocrine targets for obesity therapy.

We hypothesize that variation in oral sensation influences chronic disease risk by impacting dietary behaviors. Bitterness of 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) and fungiform papilla (FP) number serve as genetic taste markers. Data support that nontasters (who taste PROP as least bitter or have lowest FP n...

We examined the kinetics of D-ghrelin immunoreactivity in human plasma in comparison to O-ghrelin or total ghrelin by using a D-ghrelin-specific radioimmunoassay. The dynamics of plasma D-ghrelin was assessed following glucose- or meal-ingestion in healthy, non-obese subjects (5 males and 5 females)...
