In vitro cytotoxic and antiviral activities of Ficus carica latex extracts.

Nat Prod Res 25(3):310-9 (2011) PMID 21294043

The latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of skin infections such as warts and also diseases of possible viral origin. Five extracts (methanolic, hexanic, ethyl acetate, hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) and chloroformic) of this species were investigated in vitro for their antiviral potential activity against herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1), echovirus type 11 (ECV-11) and adenovirus (ADV). To evaluate the capacity of the extracts to inhibit the replication of viruses, the following assays were performed: adsorption and penetration, intracellular inhibition and virucidal activity. Observation of cytopathic effects was used to determine the antiviral action. The hexanic and hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) extracts inhibited multiplication of viruses by tested techniques at concentrations of 78 µg mL(-1). These two extracts were possible candidates as herbal medicines for herpes virus, echovirus and adenovirus infectious diseases. All extracts had no cytotoxic effect on Vero cells at all tested concentrations.

Direct sequencing of the PAX8 gene revealed a new heterozygous mutation (c.74C>G) in all affected individuals. It leads to substitution of proline with arginine at codon 25 (P25R). Fluorescence microscopy showed that P25R is normally located in the nucleus. In transient transfection studies this mut...

We demonstrate that the Neurospora crassa NDUFAF2 homologue, the 13.4L protein, is a late assembly factor that associates with complex I assembly intermediates containing the membrane arm and the connecting part but lacking the N-module of the enzyme. Furthermore, we provide evidence that dissociati...

    Kidney Int (2013) PMID 23636170

We know remarkably little about which retained solutes are toxic and this limits our ability to improve dialysis therapies. To explore this, we employed untargeted mass spectrometry to identify solutes that are efficiently cleared by the kidney. High-resolution mass spectrometry detected 1808 featur...
