Mechanoreception in motile flagella of Chlamydomonas.

Nat Cell Biol 13(5):630-2 (2011) PMID 21478860

Ciliates and flagellates temporarily swim backwards on collision by generating a mechanoreceptor potential. Although this potential has been shown to be associated with cilia in Paramecium, the molecular entity of the mechanoreceptor has remained unknown. Here we show that Chlamydomonas cells express TRP11, a member of the TRP (transient receptor potential) subfamily V, in the proximal region of the flagella, and that suppression of TRP11 expression results in loss of the avoiding reaction. The results indicate that Chlamydomonas flagella exhibit mechanosensitivity, despite constant motility, by localizing the mechanoreceptor in the proximal region, where active bending is restricted.

We propose bends and twists and combines the two movements. It is able to propagate wave trains that could be involved in the development of biomimetic actuators of various mechanisms such as (sub)aquatic robotic propellers as well as robotic trunks....

We characterized the dynamics of the Myxococcus xanthus gliding motor protein AglR, a homolog of the Escherichia coli flagella stator protein MotA. We observed that AglR decorated a helical structure, and the AglR helices rotated when cells were suspended in liquid or when cells moved on agar surfac...

    J Bacteriol (2013) PMID 23543712

We proposed that the FlaB flagellin protein from S. oneidensis is modified at five serine residues with a series of novel O-linked post-translational modifications (PTMs) that differ from each other by 14 Da. These PTMs are composed in part of a 274 Da sugar residue that bears a resemblance to the n...
