Very small embryonic like(VSEL) stem cells

Journal of Nanjing Medical University 22(5):4 (2008)

It is generally accepted that adult bone marrow(BM) contains both hematopoietic stem cells(HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Recently, a rare population of stem cells different from HSCs and MSCs were identified in murine BM and human cord blood (CB), named as very small embryonic like(VSEL) stem cells. These cells are tiny round and CXCR4^+ Sca-1^+ Lin^- CD45^-, expressing SSEA - 1/4, Oct - 4 and Nanog, which have potent of differentiation into all three germ-layer lineages, such as cardiomyocytes, neural and pancreatic cells.

We investigated changes in protein profile when apoptosis was induced by exposure to geldanamycin. Differentially expressed proteins were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), in human neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells. The vimentin leve...

We studied the properties of perivascular cells from a novel source, the foetal human umbilical cord (HUC) collected from pre-term newborns. By immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry we show that pre-term/foetal HUCs contain more perivascular cells than their full-term counterparts (2.5%versus 0.15...
